The Siege of Sarajevo lasted 1325 days, between April 1992 and early 1996. Days when young men wheremobilized to defend their city; days when some of them took their cameras to face with their images the ferocity beating down on them. Based on a montage of the films of these young people, the first part of Facing Darkness will go through the four years of the Siege in a terrible description of the day-to-day struggle of the citizens of Sarajevo for survival and allow us to access the feelings, the doubts, the distress but also the energy and the fighting spirit of their authors, caught in the grip of the war. In the second part of the film, those filmmakers tell us about their experiences of the war and share with us their experiences of making films in the midst of destruction and their thoughts on taking up a camera in a time of weapons.
Le Siège de Sarajevo a duré 1325 jours, entre avril 1992 et début 1996. 1325 jours pendant lesquels quelques jeunes hommes, alors âgés de 16 à 23 ans, ont pris leurs caméras pour contrer, avec leurs images, la violence qui s’abattait sur eux alors même qu’ils avaient à défendre militairement leur ville et leurs proches. Construite par un montage des archives filmiques et vidéographiques de ces jeunes gens, la première partie d’Affronter l’obscurité traverse les quatre années du Siège et nous permet d’accéder aux sentiments, aux doutes, aux désarrois mais aussi à l’énergie et à la combativité de leurs auteurs pris au piège de la guerre. Dans la seconde partie du film, tournée aujourd’hui à Sarajevo, ces cinéastes commentant leurs propres images d’alors, partagent avec nous leurs expériences de ces années qu’ils ont passées à la défense de la ville, leurs réflexions sur le fait de prendre une caméra au temps des armes, leurs sentiments sur cette guerre jamais éteinte et leurs peurs qu’elle reprenne…
